To make maters even worse, they were traveling to commemorate the 70 year anniversary of the Katyn Massacre. At the end of the second world war, Russian troops, directed by Joseph Stalin and his secret police brutally murdered 22,000 Polish officers, prisoners and intellectuals in 1940 in and around Katyn, a village near Russia's border with Belarus.
The Polish president was widely loved and respected. The entirety of Poland is in shock and overwhelmed. This is a sad day, a day of mourning, and will not be forgotten.
