We hiked up the mountain and got pretty close to the sign. The letters are ridiculously large, towering 45 feet tall and made of Australian steel. Unfortunately, our path was barred by large shrubs and fallen trees, so we turned around and went back. Only on the way down, were we informed of a road that actually went up behind the mountain and directly to the sign.
None the less, we got some great pictures! Here's the sign.
The view is pretty stunning, and you can get a good look at the wonderful cloud of methane gas choking all life off to the LA Valley.
Makes me LOVE Hermosa Beach that much more!
Fun Fact of the trip: Hollywood was originally know as "Hollywood Land" until the latter half of the sign was removed by the Chamber of Commerce in 1949. The sign used to be illuminated by hundreds of light bulbs, but due to cost considerations, the power and bulbs were permanently removed that same year.
